As Editor in Chief of National Compass, I signed the pledge for the reason that during the 2016 national elections and the campaign season that preceded it, America had become inundated with misinformation, outright fiction and unsubstantiated rumors designed to appeal to the confirmation biases and base instincts of a sizable segment of the voting population. Equally concerning was the reality that a considerable amount of this was being launched at the United States from outside of the country and at the direction of a foreign power. While disinformation cannot be censored or outlawed, we can blunt its impact by providing alternatives and exposing the lies.
