Pro-Truth Pledge Volunteer of the Month – February 2019

Noah Heck - Volunteer of the Month February 2019

The Pro-Truth Pledge is a grassroots project made possible by the efforts of volunteers around the world.

Some of the volunteers focus their efforts on external activities, such as gathering signatures, giving presentations, running local PTP chapters, and otherwise promoting the Pro-Truth Pledge. Other volunteers work behind the scenes assisting with website maintenance, research, data entry, content creation, and a variety of other tasks.

This month we are pleased to acknowledge Noah Heck for his contribution to the success of the Pro-Truth Pledge project.

Noah Heck, Website Volunteer in Twin Falls, Idaho

I believe the only way to effect lasting change is by addressing the world as it truly is, without bias or prejudice. The Pro-Truth Pledge’s simple, scientifically backed process for framing conversations around the truth results in dialogue that can lead to real, sustainable, effective problem solving.

I’ve been working on processes to maintain the custom plugins for the PTP website and working to create new ways to allow the project to engage with the public. We’ve made it easier for visitors to search for and find information about Pledge Takers they’re interested in, and our new Media plugin will make it easier to share with others the impact the project is having around the world.

The Pro-Truth Pledge has the capability of influencing every possible aspect of our world: Healthcare, Education, Government, Science, Climate, Social Causes. Without looking through prejudiced eyes at any one impact area, I fully believe the PTP can help drive positive change in all of these areas resulting in us moving forward toward the world we all deserve.

While I had been concerned for a long time about blatant dishonesty in politics and media, the 2016 election was the straw that broke the camel’s back. There is enormous danger posed by the precedent of a candidate so willing to lie, over and over again, and even contradict himself, being able to reach the highest office. When the idea of the PTP was introduced to me, it made sense immediately.

In August, I traveled to Atlanta to table at DragonCon, an enormous convention for sci-fi, gaming, comic and animation fans, etc. There I was able to get out the message about the Pro-Truth Pledge and to obtain numerous pledge signatures. By securing thousands of individual pledge signatures, we can both press public figures to sign and hopefully influence the signers’ social media behavior. One signer made a point of saying she would be much more careful before sharing politically charged content.

I try to practice what the PTP preaches by acknowledging, whether verbally or online, by honoring, sharing, and encouraging the truth. I look forward to there being increased scrutiny on public figures who refuse to take the Pro-Truth Pledge. I hope that they will be repeatedly interrogated as to why they are not willing to commit to adhere to facts.

I think that by spreading the importance of the truth, people will not be swayed by illogical ideas or ideologies. Once everyone accepts the reality we live in, we can finally debate properly about our concepts and create a better world. Also, the impacts of this new kind of mentality would be very positive. I can especially see this in Brazil since we really miss honesty in politics. We have constant corruption scandals, and with a pledge to press the politicians the situation could be reverted one day.

I am the coordinator of the activities related to PTP in my state, Ceará. My main function is to organize the local volunteers to work in activities related to the pledge. The volunteers are divided into different areas, some of them work by gathering signatures, others by working on social media, and in order to understand the tasks I delegate to them I have to do a little bit of everything myself. Managing volunteers and spreading the ideas of the PTP not only increased my social skills, but also helped me to better understand the pledge.

I am very excited about the potential of this project. I want the Pro-Truth Pledge to make people reflect on the role of truth in social relations and politics. I want news organizations and people who spread misleading information to be identified, and I want positive recognition for those who fight against lies and misinformation. I believe that this project can truly pressure politicians to be more honest and lead society to a brighter future.

Duff Dyer, PTP Activist (Columbus, Ohio)

I am passionate about the Pro-Truth Pledge because I don’t see how we can honestly change the world without a common understanding of reality.

I collect signatures for the PTP by attending public events, giving presentations to local groups and organizations, organizing social events, and talking about the PTP in my daily life.

I have a long-term view of the impact of the Pro-Truth Pledge.  It may not make a difference tomorrow, but I can’t believe if we each do a little bit to expand the PTP’s influence, that it won’t have a major influence in the future.  “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”  It’s important to work now for the future.

Randall Saunders, Online Research Volunteer

I do internet research for contact information on parties to whom we want to reach out, such as community groups, political parties, and newspapers. Most recently, I’ve been focusing on candidates for political office. I search the websites of state election boards and download or create lists of candidates and their emails. These lists are then provided to other volunteers, who contact the candidates and invite them to sign the Pro-Truth Pledge. In part because of my efforts, in recent weeks several state legislators have signed the PTP, including Ariana Kelly (Democrat, Maryland), Shane Sandridge (Republican, Colorado), Ryan Fecteau (Democrat, Maine), and Kathy Hogan (Democrat, North Dakota).

What makes me passionate about the PTP is that I can see that my individual actions can have a positive impact on the level of political discourse across the entire nation. Over the next decade, I hope the PTP will help to restore balance to our political and cultural debates – namely, that reality matters, regardless of our individual opinions and perspectives.

I input names into the Pro-Truth Pledge website to represent signatures that are collected by PTP activists. I also curate the Public Figures page, making sure that each public figure who takes the pledge has a listing that includes a picture and links to their social media profiles.
I am excited about the Pro-Truth Pledge project because, as a law librarian, I am committed to the facts and the verifiable truth.

PTP Volunteer of the Month 2018-5

Stephanie Frizzell, PTP Activist in Olympia, Washington State

As a volunteer for the Pro-Truth Pledge I carry the message to political figures in my area to share, encourage, and honor the truth, and I appeal to them to take the pledge.

The state of public discourse in America is at such a low I would despair except the PTP has revived my confidence that people can overcome the challenges that face us today.

PTP Volunteers of the Month - April 2018

External Volunteer

Carl Baker, Washington State Organizer

I’m the Washington State group lead and I am part of the PTP Political Cultivation Committee. I’ve also to mentored a couple of folks in other locations.

I’m hopeful that the Pro-Truth Pledge project will help return our nation to a less divisive state and allow some form of political and social progress to be made.

Internal Volunteer

Nora Koci, Video and Audio Editor

I edit audio and video for Intentional Insights social media, our YouTube channel, and for promoting the Pro-Truth Pledge. I’m also currently working on a new radio show that Intentional Insights is coming out with – the “Think Better, Live Better Show”.

I’m excited about the Pro-Truth Pledge because it is important that people tell the truth and advocate truthfulness in politics, social media, and in constructing their arguments. I’m glad that the Pro-Truth Pledge is gaining ground because there is so much misinformation out there, people need to be aware and push for the truth!

Pro-Truth Pledge Volunteers of the Month – March 2018

The Pro-Truth Pledge project is a grassroots effort made possible by the efforts of volunteers around the world.

This month we are pleased to acknowledge two volunteers for their contribution to the success of the Pro-Truth Pledge project: Ken Whitaker and Kevin Bavaro. They are great examples of reliability, consistency, flexibility, and teamwork that fuels the Pro-Truth Pledge.

External Volunteer

Ken Whitaker, Utah State Organizer

I volunteer with the Pro-Truth Pledge as the Utah state organizer, concentrating on the Salt Lake City area. I’m mentoring four other, new volunteers from different areas of the world. I’m also part of the PTP Political Cultivation Committee, which is just getting up and running.

What excites me about the Pro-Truth Pledge project is the thought of being able to turn the tide on all the “fake news” and “alternative facts” that seem so rampant these days. I’m excited to be able to get people to sign the pledge and have successfully gotten several candidates to sign it. I’m now very excited to start presenting it to our currently elected officials and really start reversing the impact of lies in our politics.

Internal Volunteer

Kevin Bavaro, Newsletter Coordinator

My volunteer role with the Pro-Truth Pledge is to coordinate the editing and publication of the Pro-Truth Pledge newsletter. It has been exciting to watch the mail list grow from the original few hundred to now well over 5,000 people who have taken the pledge, and I enjoy being able to help communicate the latest news and happenings.

I am excited about the project, and got involved, because I saw an opportunity to support reversing the emphasis on loudness and volume of news, and to return the focus to quality and truth. I used to do both news writing and public relations (mainly in sports) and have not enjoyed seeing the communication of information focus on ratings and income. The project’s engagement of both consumers and sources of information is key to me, and this greater engagement the Pro-Truth Pledge is fostering should help create an improved quality of debate and discussion – both in the US and in my home country, Canada.
